Maryland politicians are considering new crane operating regulations

A fatal crane accident near Annapolis Maryland that occurred three months ago is serving as the driving force behind a proposed set of new and improved regulations. Law makers are partnering with crane operators and union officials alike in an attempt to produce a comprehensive set of guidelines. Maryland is one of 15 states that requires crane operators to be licensed. The new rules will call for mandatory training, and potentially licensing, of all supplementary crane personnel such as riggers and signal persons.

If approved by the legislative committee the new regulations could go into effect within the next three months.
